It is extremely hot today, and it’s going to be like that for the next days! So what better opportunity to learn some vocabulary about hot weather and the heat in Greek? Let’s start!

Σήμερα έχει καύσωνα = today is extremely hot 🥵
Πόσους βαθμούς έχει σήμερα;
Σήμερα έχει 40 βαθμούς = Today it is 40 degrees
Ο βαθμός = the temperature degree
Πόση θερμοκρασία / τι θερμοκρασία έχει σήμερα;
Η θερμοκρασία = the temperature (we measure it in celcious C)

Η θερμοκρασία θα ανεβεί στους 42 βαθμούς = the temperature will rise up to 42 degrees C

Ο υδράργυρος = mercury 

Ο υδράργυρος χτύπησε κόκκινο: 43 βαθμούς στην Αθήνα!

Heat wave alarm: 43 degrees in Athens!(104 degrees F).

To θερμόμετρο = the thermometer 🌡
With verbs «έχει» or «κάνει»

Έχει / κάνει ζέστη = It’s a hot day, heat 🥵

Έχει / κάνει πολλή ζέστη! = It’s really hot! It’s boiling, roasting, burning up 🥵🥵
Έχει / κάνει πάρα πολύ ζέστη = It’s extremely hot! 🥵🥵🥵

Έχει / κάνει τρελή, αποπνικτική ζέστη = it’s sweltering, scorching, sizzling, blazing! Generally really uncomfortable (the heat)
Έχει / κάνει αφόρητη ζέστη =  It’s unbearable (the heat)

βράζει ο τόπος! = it’s boiling hot!

Είναι (σαν) φούρνος = its like an oven

Είναι φούρνος εδώ μέσα! Άνοιξε κανένα παράθυρο! = It’s like an oven in here! Open a window!

Other verbs to use:

ζεσταίνομαι = I’m feeling hot, warm (because of the heat)
Ιδρώνω = i sweat and I’m sweating

ο ιδρώτας = the sweat

διψάω = I’m thirsty

ζαλίζομαι = I’m feeling dizzy

λιώνω = I’m melting (from the heat)

αισθάνομαι κουρασμένος-η = m feeling tired

έχω πονοκέφαλο = I have a headache

Η θερμοπληξία = heatstroke

Σκάω / ψήνομαι / βράζω από τη ζέστη! Μπορούμε να ανοίξουμε το παράθυρο; 

Δε μπορώ άλλο! = I cannot stand it any more!
Καλύτερα μη βγεις έξω με αυτή τη ζέστη! Better not go outside with this heat!

Μείνε μέσα! Stay inside!

Μέσα στο σπίτι έχει πιο δροσιά! Inside the house is cooler!

Ανάβω /άναψε το κλιματιστικό = I switch on / switch on (imperative) the air conditioning.
Ανάβω /άναψε τον ανεμιστήρα = I switch on / switch on (imperative) the fan
Σβήνω / σβήσε ή κλείνω / κλείσε το κλιματιστικό / τον ανεμιστήρα.=

I switch off / switch off (imperative) the air conditioning / the fan

Κλείνω / κλείσε τα πατζούρια = I close / close (imperative) the shutters.

Ιδιωματική έκφραση: Σκάει ο τζίτζικας = it’s baking, scorching heat

Το τζιτζίκι ή ο τζίτζικας = the cicada 

We use it when it’s really hot outside and even τζιτζίκια (cicadas) that sing all day during summer, the soundtrack of Greek summer, cannot stand it!

Γι’αυτό λοιπόν, πολύ νερό, σε σκιερό και δροσερό μέρος, ελαφρύ φαγητό, και όχι έξω τις μεσημεριανές ώρες, εκτός κι αν πρόκειται για την παραλία και πάλι στη σκιά! 

So, drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. Avoid staying in direct sunlight between 11:00-16:00. Put on sunblock of 30 SPF
